Healthy Living London talks to James Winfield, co-founder and Fitness Director at ReboundUK to hear more about 2017’s hottest fitness trend, rebounding.
Who are ReboundUK and what is rebounding?
We are the world’s leading experts in rebounding – a full body, low impact, high intensity workout performed on a mini trampoline, promising fast results.
We are also the creators of Bounce& Burn, the UK’s first online platform for 24/7 home access to rebounding workouts.
Rebounding sounds a little like trampolining –isn’t that just for kids?
Trampolining, bouncing, jumping, rebounding – it’s for all ages! Cast your mind back to school holidays, bouncing around with your friends on the garden trampoline. Within seconds you’re smiling ear to ear. There’s no denying the absolute feel good factor of bouncing up and down, throwing our bodies into all sorts of shapes, limbs flying around free.
Translate this feel good factor into a ‘grown up’, fun-filled workout and you’ve got the most effective total body workout ever. NASA claim rebounding to be ‘one of the most effective exercises known to man.’
How does it differ from my child’s mini trampoline?
A child’s mini trampoline is lightweight with small springs. It’s not designed for adults to use for an exercise class. Professional rebounders weigh more than 10kgs, have large muscle shape springs (bungee or metal) providing a resilient bounce.
Congratulations on the launch of Bounce & Burn – tell us more about this online platform?
Bounce & Burn is an on-demand service offering members over 50 workouts whenever and wherever they prefer. With new workouts being added every month, there’s even more opportunity for people to get into great shape, whatever their fitness ability. Be it an introduction to rebounding, full body blast, plyometrics, balance or rehabilitation, it’s all there.
At just £9.99 per month, members gain access to a variety of online workouts, two new workouts every month, high energy music downloads and specialist nutrition plans. It’s simple: register, select your workout and get fit. Choose from cardio, resistance, HIIT, rehabilitation, stretching, sport-specific programmes and much more.
How can bouncing get people fit? It sounds like too much fun!
We’re all after that quick fix; the fastest way to burn calories, slim down and tone up. We also crave the next best thing in fitness – a workout that not only leaves us with an amazing exercise ‘high’ but a workout that’s so much fun, it doesn’t actually feel like exercise. And that is rebounding for you!
The workouts focus on the downward push, through the balls of the feet, jumping no higher than 6 inches. Mixing dance choreography with explosive squats, twists, lunges and sprints, rebounding will change your body shape as it tones and tightens muscles and skin.
The constant change in gravitational pressure works every single cell in the body. At the bottom of the bounce our exercise body weight can be up to 3.24 times heavier than normal whilst at the top we are weightless, making rebounding the most effective total body workout ever.
Are there group classes that people can go to in London? Or is it all done at home?
The new Bounce & Burn platform is perfect for home workouts. Membership grants an all access pass to the best rebounding workouts to fit around your work and family commitments. You can even settle down for an evening of TV catch up. Loose Women’s Nadia Sawalha raves about rebounding: “Rebounding is my most favourite exercise ever. I truly love it, I get a massive calorie burn and feel brilliant afterwards! The best thing is that I do it while watching The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills. Sometimes I bounce for ten minutes, sometimes two hours.”
Health clubs and fitness studios offer Bounce & Burn classes nationwide. For example, our fantastic team at Slice Studios in Parsons Green create the perfect combinations of dance moves, plyometric exercises and resistance training. Slice even offer hen do Bounce & Burn parties!
Who would most benefit from rebounding?
There are no barriers with rebounding – it’s ideal for all ages, fitness abilities and gender. The ultimate low impact, high intensity workout with an overwhelming feel good factor. Sports scientists believe that it is the momentary victory over gravity and the g-force felt on the body during rebounding that releases more endorphins than other forms of exercise.
Of course as with any exercise routine its important to check with your doctor beforehand. Rebounding is not recommended during pregnancy but is great for toning those inner muscles post-pregnancy and for getting fit and healthy pre-pregnancy.
I’m afraid I’d accidentally wee myself if I went rebounding – wouldn’t it make it worse?
Many women have these concerns, you’re not alone. But good news, rebounding is actually a secret weapon for bladder control. Bouncing on an unstable surface provides a constant balance challenge leading to the involuntary contractions of the deep core muscles and the weakened sphincter muscle (experienced by many women and new mums).
Pregnancy, birth and age can weaken the sphincter muscles of the bladder and the bladder lining. Through low impact exercise, however, strength can be regained – it might not come straight away, but it will develop over a short period time.
Rebounding will exert a force on the cell walls of the bladder encouraging it to become more elastic and durable resulting in a more comfortable, healthier and freer lifestyle. Nadia Sawalha has seen life changing results through rebounding and no longer struggles with incontinence, “I do it every morning now before I go to work. I don’t wet myself any more. So the thing is, if you’ve got it, you can reverse it.”
As well as working the pelvic floor, how else can rebounding get you fit?
Bounce & Burn workouts can burn in the region of 550 calories in 45 minutes. You’re promised immediate results from rebounding – weight loss, toning up, gains in strength, co-ordination, posture and even mental wellbeing. It’s also a detoxifying exercise boosting lymphatic drainage, ridding toxins in the body and significantly improving the immune system.
What’s the most fun exercise to do on the Rebounding?
Where do I start? We love to supercharge our workouts with squats, lunges, rotations and sprints. To really feel the burn and test your fitness, you can perform explosive plyometric exercises such as squat jumps or add extra resistance by using sand weights and resistance bands.
Rebounding is the perfect exercise for newcomers to exercise or those returning to fitness – it’s all about having fun while getting fit. It’s also a great for runners, triathletes or team sports. Substituting the miles as a runner, you’ll strengthen your joints through low impact exercise and the glutes, quads and calves, too.
