Energy balls are becoming increasingly popular, and for a good reason. They make an ideal snack for when you’re on the go as they are packed full of hearty, nutritional ingredients in such a small pack- age. My favourite ingredients are a combination of gooey medjool dates and rolled oats as together, they perfectly mimic the taste of cookie dough. For an extra indulgent taste, I added in chunks of high quality raw dark chocolate. The rich, bitter flavour works really well against the sweet cookie dough.
One of the best things about this Chocolate Cookie Dough Energy Balls recipe is that you can make them in batch, pop them in a large ma- son jar and keep in the fridge to grab whenever you’re feeling hungry, or in need of an energy boost. There are also tonnes of flavour combinations to experiment with, using dates as a base then adding peanut butter, hazelnuts, almonds, freeze dried strawberries, superfood powders, for example. Add a scoop of plant based protein powder to turn them into protein balls, ideal post work out. Use gluten-free oats to guarantee that they’re ok so sensitive tums.
These make 10 decent-sized balls.
Ingredients:
- 6 pitted medjool dates
- 3⁄4 cup of oats
- 1⁄4 cup of dark chocolate chunks
- 2 tsp of almond butter
Method
These chocolate chunk cookie dough balls are so simple to make by blending together the oats, almond butter and pitted dates in a food processor until the mix holds together in a ball. Add the chocolate chunks afterwards by kneading them into the mix, I simply chopped up half a bar for my favourite high quality, raw dark chocolate. I’ve found that keeping the pieces fairly large gives the balls a nice chunky consistency against the gooey base, making them the perfectly nourishing sweet treat.
