Top 5 Alternative Ways To Exercise This Winter

November 21, 2014 by Hannah Cox 1 Comment

Keeping fit throughout the winter months can be hard, especially in cold and rainy England! Here are 5 alternative ways to exercise this winter, that should keep you motivated!

1.)  Ice-Skating

With a plethora of ice-rinks popping up around London this time of year, your only struggle is to choose which ones to go to.

I have already glided on the Natural History Museum’s Rink, which was in excellent condition, despite recent claims that it was melting!

Outdoor rinks are so much fun and atmospheric this time of year, but can prove to be quite pricey.

2.)  Skiing, Snowboarding or Sledging

If you are lucky enough to get away this winter, then a skiing trip is an excellent form of exercise. Not only is the activity a great cardio workout, but the fresh air is just wonderful.*

If you are not able to get away, maybe England will snow… failing that, there are many snow centres throughout the UK.

3.)  Gardening

Raking and clearing the many leaves that fall in the garden is an exhausting, but satisfying form of exercise! I cleared the leaves in my garden a week ago and it took me an hour. However, the two large trees that are dancing in the wind, have provided me with yet another workout and they’re not done yet! I can confidently add this to my weekly workout schedule, at least for the next few weeks! Bonus is that it’s free!

4.)  Santa Run

Why not try a Santa fun run for charity?

There is a 5k and 10k option for the Santa run, taking place in Victoria Park on the 7th December, 2014. Not only will you help raise money and awareness for your chosen charity, but you can also submerge yourself in the festive spirit and probably confuse any child that might be watching!

5.)  Christmas Shopping

I would argue that this is definitely exercise;

Battling the hoards of eager shoppers, whilst trying to protect yourself from the constant shoving of people, lugging your inevitably heavy shopping finds around all the stores, darting in and out of the crowds, avoiding the annoying people who have decided to stop on the pavement, disrupting the flow, rushing around trying to find that perfect gift, but being indecisive, so having to go to copious amounts of stores just to end up trekking a mile back to the original store. Oh, I could go on…

*Health Advice: Whilst these 5 alternative ways to exercise are fun, please do wear appropriate clothing when participating in outdoor winter activities. I would always recommend wearing a helmet whilst skiing or snowboarding, no matter what your ability. You can always add a fun helmet cover, like my bunny one!

    Ice skating is a fun exercise that you can do during winter. It can help you to be healthy while enjoying it. Ice skating can give you the chance to bond with your family and friends as well.
