Here at Healthy Living London we are passionate about finding ways to infuse a little more activity into our days, and one of our favourite ways to squeeze in a bit more movement is by embracing an active commute.
Whether it’s walking, running or cycling, active commuting can benefit both your mental and physical health, setting you up for a happier and more productive day!
Health Benefits
Research from The University of Edinburgh suggests that walking and cycling regularly can help reduce risk factors for diseases such as Type II diabetes, some cancers and cardiovascular disease, as well as reducing the risk of premature mortality. The same research found evidence that regular walking can help prevent and treat depression and anxiety. All massive wins if you ask us!
Environmental Impact
Active commuting isn’t just great for your health and wellbeing, it’s also great for the planet. In 2019 transport was responsible for 27% of greenhouse gases emission in the UK, the most of any sector. While greenhouse gas emissions are gradually reducing overall, there’s not been much of a reduction in the transport sector over the years, so taking steps to help solve that problem is always positive.
Oh, and if the health benefits and environmental impacts weren’t enough, an active commute means you’ll never have to spend your journey to work with you face in some random persons armpit again. Win!
Active commuting can take a moment to get used to, you might need to give yourself a little more time, keep an eye on the weather and trade out your smart work shoes for trainers, but it’s well worth the effort! To make things a bit easier we’ve rounded up our favourite active commute essentials to help you on your way.
The Perfect Pack
Whether you’re running, walking or cycling to work you’re going to need the perfect bag to tote all your essentials to and from work.
For walkers Osprey’s Arcane Tote (1) backpack can either be a backpack or a tote, making it a really versatile option. There’s lots of pockets for all your bits and bobs and a padded laptop sleeve to keep your tech safe. What’s more it’s made of 100% recycled, durable fabrics and is built to last.
Runners will love the Osprey Dyna 15 vest pack (2). Designed specifically for women this pack is not only comfortable but also has the capacity you need when you’re clocking up the miles to and from work.
If you’re cycling no matter the weather you need a bag that’ll keep your laptop and your lunch dry! The Urban Ex Rolltop FOG Edition from Chrome Industries (3) is the perfect companion, whatever the weather. Lightweight, comfy and with the protection of a dry bag, your laptop and your lunch will arrive safe and dry.
Healthy Feet Are Happy Feet
Socks aren’t the sexiest subject but if you’re clocking up the miles every day good socks are a lifesaver! We’re big fans of Darn Tough No-Show Tab Run Socks because they don’t slip, bunch or rub, three of the biggest frustrations when you’re running or walking to work! Constructed with a fine gauge kit and a blend of nylon, Merino and lycra, these socks are naturally moisture-wicking, breathable and anti-microbial. Not sexy, but healthy feet are happy feet! A definite part of your active commute essentials!
Stay Caffeinated On The Go
One of the best things about walking to work is that you get to enjoy a coffee on the journey! Whether you make it at home or use the money you’re saving on train fares to invest in a Pret Coffee subscription, keep your hot drink hot in a Hydroflask coffee cup as you clock up the miles before your first meeting. Plus the Flex Sip lid means you’ll never find your laptop taking a swim in your daily latte.
The Right Shoes For The Job
Running or walking to work calls for some comfy cushioned trainers and we love the Ghost 14 from Brooks. Super comfy, lightweight and available in loads of colourways from office ready black to limited edition designs of the New York Skyline, these are shoes you’ll want to clock up the miles in. Plus the Ghost 14 is also Brooks’ first carbon neutral shoe, making it planet friendly choice too!
PE Kit That Doesn’t Look Like PE Kit
An active commute calls for an active wardrobe. If you’re not lucky enough to be able to get away with sportswear in the office Lululemon’s City Sleek wide-leg pants (2) are the perfect solution mixing office-ready style with a quick dry fabric and lots of stretch – ideal for walkers and cyclists. Top it off with Lululemon’s Back In Action long-sleeve shirt (1) and a rain repellant Always Effortless Jacket (3) and you’re ready for whatever your commute and your meetings throw at you.
