As a busy mum of three energetic boys (aged 7, 6, and 2), I’m always on the lookout for ways to boost their health and resilience. Recently, we decided to give Microbz probiotics a go—specifically the Kids formula for the boys and Revive and Sustain for myself. I definitely need reviving..!
Personally, I’m conscious that good gut health is important. I’ve heard there’s a link with eczema and since my youngest had particularly bad eczema as a baby (and it will forever need managing), I want to do what I can to keep it at bay. When I remember, I’ll add kimchi to my meals, or buy kefir (although I find it can be expensive).
I was particularly interested in trying Microbz as my youngest had been suffering from a nasty and persistent chest infection and as well as a trip to the GP, we’d also had to go to A&E. As a result, he was put on antibiotics and I’d heard that taking probiotics during and after a course of antibiotics can help reduce any side effects such as diarrhoea.
First Impressions of Microbz
Let’s talk about taste. The Kids formula has a pretty sour flavour, which my boys didn’t take to kindly. While not terrible (quite similar to apple cider vinegar), it’s definitely a taste they haven’t acquired; I actually quite like it! We’ve tried disguising it in various juices but it seems like their tastebuds are very sensitive… there’s no fooling them. By now, they will take it reluctantly.
For me, I’ve been on the Revive so far, although I’ve just started the Sustain. I find the Revive somewhat sour, but also herbal. It’s a taste which can take a few goes to get used to, but now I don’t even think about it. It’s grown on me!
It’s really easy to store and use the Microbz probiotics; they don’t need to be kept in the fridge, and it’s advised to be taken before food ideally. What’s great is that you can also give children the ‘adult’ ones too. Shelf-life is fairly short (one month), but this is enough if you’re taking it daily.
Health Benefits
One of the main reasons I wanted to try these probiotics was to support my youngest, who had a nasty wheezy cough and was on antibiotics. I was hoping the probiotics would aid his recovery and help prevent any further issues.
Over the six weeks we’ve been using Microbz probiotics, we’ve seen some promising results. There were two bouts of diarrhoea and vomiting going around at nursery and school. I’d accepted that we would, at some point, get it. After all, these children pretty much spend their time licking each others’ face… Remarkably, my youngest avoided both completely, even when it seemed everyone else in his room caught it. My eldest did catch one of the bugs but only had a very mild case. Myself and the middle one avoided it entirely too.
I also get eczema on my hands and that has improved – while my hands are still dry, the skin is definitely much less irritated. Could it be the sunshine or…
Could It Be the Probiotics?
While it’s hard to say definitively, I do wonder if the probiotics played a role in our physical resilience. The timing certainly suggests a connection, and there’s plenty of research suggesting probiotics can support gut health and immunity.
Final Thoughts
Overall, our experience with Microbz probiotics has been positive, though not without some challenges for the children. The taste isn’t a hit with the kids, and it’s tricky to disguise. But if it means fewer sick days and a bit more peace of mind, it’s worth it. For me, I’ve seen enough of a difference to continue taking the Sustain.
