Twenty years ago Meera Bhogal was struggling with severe bloating and debilitating migraines that would leave her bed-ridden for days. At the time Meera was a young mum running a nursery and trying to keep head-above-water – she did not have time to be unwell, something I think we can all relate to.
Meera’s first port of call was to see her doctors, but managing her symptoms with medication took its toll and something had to give. Meera started monitoring her lifestyle and routines and, over time, she started to notice patterns and how when she ate certain foods she’d experience a migraine or cramps afterwards. With nothing to lose Meera radically changed her diet and cut out dairy and wheat. The results were amazing, Meera had very few migraines and not one stomach ache. It was a game changer.
However, change can be scary, and after a lifetime of eating meals based around dairy or wheat Meera was terrified about how narrow her eating options would be and whether she’d be left feeling hungry. 20 years ago there wasn’t a whole load of information out there about how to eat when you have intolerances, so Meera had to work things out for herself, and her kitchen was the solution.
A huge cook, Meera was excited to play with flavours and ingredients as she explored the nutritional value of different food, even introducing an allergy friendly menu at her nursery. Of course, as a busy woman, Meera was conscious of the time it was taking to prep everything and is passionate about the idea that everyone can enjoy food whatever their needs – and Meera’s Made From Scratch was born.
Meera’s Made From Scratch is all about nutritious, wholesome food that is full of flavour and perfect for the whole family. Offering recipes, nutrition programmes to help you navigate specific needs and ready to use products, Meera has thought of everything you’d need to feel your very best.
We were lucky enough to try some of Meera’s delicious sweet treats – delicious almond brittle and indulgent chocolate caramel biscuit squares. Made from transparently sourced organic ingredients these sweet treats have reduced sugar and are refined sugar, dairy and gluten free, packed with flavour and nutritionally thought through. They even make their own chocolate to ensure that every aspect of their products is as perfect as possible.
Biting into my first chocolate caramel biscuit I could just feel the love that went into making them, and my goodness the flavour! They tasted so good. Not too sweet, but still very much a treat. The biscuit had just the right amount of crunch and the caramel was soft not sticky, they’d be as perfect with coffee after a dinner party as they would a mid-morning pick me up. Delicious.
One of the issues that drove Meera was bloating, so it only seemed right to try her Happy Tummy Tea. A refreshing and calming tea designed to help with bloating and spasms, this tea is so calming and soothing, especially when you’re feeling a little uncomfortable. Made with herbs and spices which are good for digestion like fennel seeds, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon and peppermint, this tea tastes delicious on its own or with a slice of lemon, and it’s just one of those drinks that makes you feel like you’re taking care of yourself.
