One Planet Pizza joins forces with Made in Hackney to deliver 250 pizzas direct to families in London to help tackle food poverty.
Tackling food poverty
One Planet Pizza is helping to tackle food poverty. Partnering with community food kitchen, Made in Hackney, they have given away 250 plant-based pizzas to residents in East London.
On 16 February 2021, the planet-positive pizza brand delivered hundreds of pizzas direct to the doors of families in Hackney. The charitable move was prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the closure of schools. With 11,500 children in the borough in receipt of free school meals, many families have been challenged by food poverty and the prospect of making additional lunches. Some have been reliant on food parcels from the government, which can be difficult to access.
Pizzas and fresh vegetables
The 250 One Planet Pizzas were delivered with fresh vegetables donated by both the brand and Made in Hackney. Each pizza was accompanied by a recipe card so that families could create pizzas to appeal to adults and children, with colourful plant-based toppings. Meanwhile, the delicious tomato sauce on the pizza bases contains omega rich chia seeds. Plus there are flax seeds in every base.
By sharing its flavour-packed, plant-based pizzas, it is hoped that One Planet Pizza and Made in Hackney have worked to provide not just a delicious meal, but a fun pizza-topping activity for families to enjoy.
Affordable food for everyone
A company with family values at its heart, One Planet Pizza was founded by father and son duo, Mike and Joe Hill. Joe says:
Made in Hackney believes that everyone should have access to affordable food that is good for people and planet alike. Our company, One Planet Pizza, aims to do good as well as produce epic plant-based pizzas, and so Made in Hackney’s message resonated with us. We decided to get involved and support their great work by delivering our One Planet Pizzas direct to families’ front doors. Now they can receive a wholesome treat without cost, or the need to queue up for a package during these strange times.
In addition to the 250 pizzas delivered by One Planet Pizza, the company has also partnered with Made in Hackney to deliver an online pizza-making workshop in March. This family friendly event will teach families about plant-based nutrition and is aimed at inspiring them with further fun-to-make and great-to-eat pizza ideas.
Sarah Bentley, founder and project director of Made in Hackney says:
By providing nutritious food to families free of charge, we can ensure that children receive a meal, regardless of where they live or their economic background. Like One Planet Pizza, our recipes are entirely plant-based, meaning that every family can enjoy them, irrespective of dietary preferences.
Community cookery school and charity, Made In Hackney, has been delivering free meals to households in need since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. Each person who is part of the service receives six nutritious, culturally varied cooked meals a week, delivered direct to their door by the team of cycle couriers. To date Made In Hackney has provided more than 70,000 meals.
