Here at Healthy Living London we’re passionate about eating well but with busy lives we don’t always find packing our diets full of the good stuff easy. It’s why we love having products on hand to help us add a little extra goodness to even the dullest meal, and Haskapa Berry Powder has us hooked! 100% organic, vegan and packed with vitamin C, this purple powder is the natural boost everyone needs.
We all know that berries are good for us, but they can go off really quickly or be tasteless, especially if they’ve been flown half way around the world. Haskapa Berry Powder takes everything that is good about berries and freeze dries it into a convenient, nutritious and really tasty powder that you can add to pretty much anything. Just 1-2 teaspoons is enough to add a superfood berry boost to a smoothie, yoghurt or bowl of porridge, making it a super easy addition to your every day routine.
First Impressions
I tried Haskapa Berry Powder in my morning smoothie with some banana and peanut butter and I could taste it through those strong flavours, pretty impressive for just two teaspoons of bright purple powder!
The Nitty Gritty
With the equivalent of over 800 Haskap berries in every pouch Haskapa Berry Powder delivers the power of nature in its most concentrated form delivering four times the anthocyanins and three times the antioxidants of blueberries.
So what are anthocyanins? Pronounced an-tho-sigh-an-ins, anthocyanins are naturally occurring plant pigments that give fruit and berries the most beautiful blue, purple and red colours. These vivid hues aren’t just pretty to look at, they’re also thought to have health benefits. It’s been suggested anthocyanins can help boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, heart disease and viral infections, although there’s not much evidence to support these claims. However, there’s a bit more credibility around the benefits of antioxidants and what is clear is that anthocyanin-rich foods have a role in good nutrition.
Antioxidants are natural compounds that are found in a range of foods that may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, unstable molecules which are produced as a result of normal biological processes that occur in our cells every day. Where there are too many free radicals and too few antioxidants we can find ourselves in a state of oxidative stress, which may lead to cell damage and the best way to manage this is by eating lots of lovely fruit and veggies! It’s also been suggested anthocyanins can help boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, heart disease and viral infections, although there’s not much evidence to support these claims. However, there’s a bit more credibility around the benefits of antioxidants and what is clear is that anthocyanin-rich foods have a role in good nutrition.
Independent research from Northumbria University has also suggested that Haskap berries might offer benefits when it comes to endurance running performance, and as a marathon runner I am all ears for anything that might give me the edge. The team investigated the effects of fruit and vegetables on human performance and athletic recovery and discovered that it took longer for athletes who had consumed Haskap berries to fatigue in comparison to other runners, and that their overall 5km times improved by around 20 seconds. This is a relatively small study (just 30 male runners), but it’s interesting to know these little purple berries might have performance boosting properties!
The Bottom Line
A tasty purple powder that’ll add a nutritious boost to your basics.
