TOP 5: Ways to Eat Avocado Pips

April 9, 2016 by Eliza Flynn Leave a Comment

Did you know that avocado pips contain more than 70% of the antioxidants found in the entire avocado? It seems silly to throw it away when antioxidants help boost the immune system and can help prevent cardiovascular disease, one of the biggest killers in the UK. The main reason why few people think about eating avocado pips is because they’re not really something that are easy to eat.

ways to eat an avocado seed

Well that’s about to change! We’ve got our top 5 ways to eat avocado pips so you need never waste these little nutrient powerhouses again!

1. Dry them out and blend into a powder

You’ll need a high-powered blender to do this and its essential that the pip is thoroughly dried before you try this. We found a Vitamix gave the best results but if you have a spice blender, even better! If you don’t have a blender that can do this, don’t worry, there’s plenty of other ways you can extract all the avocado goodness. Store the powder in an airtight container and use a teaspoon in hot water to make tea, or add to smoothies.

2. Dry them out and grate

Careful of your knuckles when grating! The avocado seeds can be tricky to get a hold of so do this using a grip mat or with caution; it’s better to use a fine grate. As with the powder, keep the grated avocado in an airtight container and use when required.

3. Blend in a smoothie

Add a seed into a smoothie and blend everything together until smooth. Be aware this is quite bitter so make sure you balance it out with something sweet. As a general rule, use one stone for 4 portions. Stuck for inspiration? See our avocado pip smoothie recipe.

4. Chop it into bits and sprinkle onto salads

If you don’t want to grate it or blend your avocado pip, you can also chop it into small pieces and add it to salads. Please, please, watch out for fingers! To make the first cut, use tongs to hold it in position and then chop through. Once the seed is halved, it will be easier to chop up. To help chop the seed, make sure it’s washed and thoroughly dried.

5. Make tea

Chop a seed in half and steep it in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes before drinking. Make sure the seed is washed first. It’s thought that avocado pip tea can help ease stomach ache.

Note: To dry out avocado seeds clean them thoroughly and leave them in a cool dry place for a few weeks.
