Healthy Living London recently attended the Manuka Lab M.O.T. event where we sampled their range of MGO Manuka honeys. We met Dr. Sarah Brewer, who led us through a lifestyle Q&A to understand our potential exposure to cold and flu. The result of this quiz determined the best level of MGO (methylglyoxal) honey for the individual, to help keep colds and the flu at bay. We also had the opportunity to try the different strengths of MGO Manuka Lab honey and a few recipes that include their yummy honey.
So, what is Manuka honey?
Manuka honey is produced by bees in New Zealand that pollinate the Manuka Bush. The honey that is produced contains many beneficial properties, such as antibacterial properties, which is what makes it special. The MGO, or methylglyoxal, is the active ingredient in Manuka Honey, responsible for the antibacterial effects and this is what sets it apart from other honey.
What are the benefits of including Manuka Honey in your diet?
Manuka honey has antibacterial effects, is antiviral and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Because of this, Manuka honey has many benefits, a few of which are listed below…
- Helps combat colds and the flu
- Helps soothe a sore throat (The Manuka Lab honey lemon flavour tastes wonderful when added to hot water)
- Helps wounds and burns heal
- Helps gut health (eg eases symptoms of IBS)
- Helps treat acne
- Helps prevent gastric ulcers
- Aids oral hygiene as the honey inhibits growth of harmful bacteria
- May help treat the symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis
Honey has been used for hundreds of years for treatment, but more recently, scientific research has proved many of these effects. To delve deeper and find out more there are many sources, such as WebMD, or the BBC, or the NHS… to name but a few.
Why is it so expensive?
Manuka honey is only produced in New Zealand from the Manuka Bush. The harvest period is very short, meaning that only a small amount is harvested each year.
What level of MGO is right for me?
As the days get darker and the temperatures drop, it is not uncommon to pick up that cold, however Manuka Honey can help to reduce the chances of catching it. Manuka Lab have created a quiz to determine which MGO strength is most beneficial for you. Check out their quiz here.
