Recently, my sister and I visited Unity Diner, to try out their festive vegan menu. My sister is mostly vegan and we’ve found it hard to find good Christmassy vegan food so we were hoping this would be a winner.
Unity Diner is a short walk from either Shoreditch or Aldgate East station so it’s really easy to get there. It looks like a cool American diner from the outside and has buzzy vibes as soon as you step in. I love that you can see into the kitchen area.
My sister was already seated when I went in to join her and service was prompt and friendly. Having looked through the menu before I arrived, we ordered quickly. We both went for the Festive Feast burger, plus pigs in blankets to share, and a couple of sides.
Here’s our verdict on the festive feast at Unity Diner….
Pigs in Blankets: They use Moving Mountain products for these and while I’ve not tasted a vegan bacon which I think really nails this, it was still tasty. Each portion comes with 3 pigs in blankets and what we love about this, is that the full cost of these goes to supporting a pig called Matilda, plus her family, at the Surge Sanctuary which was rather heart-warming. It comes with cranberry sauce which has a LOT of flavour – it’s both sweet and sour at the same time and you definitely only need a little to pack a big punch.
Festive Feast Burger: The burger looked good and it came with a Moving Mountains patty, cranberry sauce, charred sprout slaw, cheese and bacon, all nestled in a brioche bun. It had a good ‘first bite’ – you know that feeling when you take a big bite and it feels good to do so. I’m very much not a fan of sprouts but the slaw went really well with this. In fact, it was all very tasty, however, a word of advice – ask them to go easy on the cranberry sauce as it was too overpowering for the rest of the flavours. I asked for extra aioli to help dampen the strong taste.
Sides: Of course we had to have sides – sage & garlic pan-fried potatoes and fried corn on the cobs which came smothered in garlic butter and aioli. I really liked the fried corn (you get three small cobs).
All in all, we had a very pleasant meal – it was fun to try their festive feast. They’ve got a great range of burger options on their menu and some delicious-looking drinks which we didn’t get round to trying. When we asked our server what her favourite dish was, she said we had to try the Tofish!
Their Festive menu is available until 23rd December so get in there quick!
