FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Having never done a barre based cardio class before, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as I arrived at the Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden. What struck me upon meeting our instructor Ashley, was that this was going to be a great experience and a workout that was focused on fun. Her boundless energy and enthusiasm for fitness is infectious.
WHAT’S IT LIKE?
Armed with a positive attitude and a yoga mat, I was expecting the class to involve a combination of ballet exercises at the barre and pilates exercises on the mat. I couldn’t have been more wrong! This is a tough workout. Designed to make you sweat and shake, Ashley’s DEFINE method is sure to gain results and fast, if practiced regularly. Expect to feel the burn as Ashley guides you through her unique sequence that is a total body workout. This was a high tempo class from the off and we didn’t stop for the full hour. Ashley’s method includes an intense sequence of squats and lunges at the barre, that is really challenging, but in a good way. My legs were shaking by the end of this section of the class, but after overloading the muscles a welcome stretch sequence followed. Back on the mat, don’t expect to relax. We worked our core, upper body and glutes hard with her unique take on mountain climbers, sit ups, press ups, gluteal bridges and more. Each cardio-infused sequence was followed by stretches, which is a concept I particularly liked, allowing a brief respite between each element of the workout. Ashley’s Define method is tough but fun. Expect to work hard, leave happy and feel that bit tighter and more toned when you wake up the following day.
I also had the chance to trial a new shoelace replacement by Hickies. I admit I was a little sceptical as I removed my laces and attached the HICKIES, which are designed to transform trainers into slip-ons, whilst guaranteeing a secure, comfortable fit. I wasn’t convinced they would stay put or offer enough support during the class, but I completely forgot I was wearing them. My trainers were just as supportive and comfortable as with my normal laces, and I am really enjoying the convenience of a slip-on trainer.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Ashley’s Define class will make you sweat, shake, and leave you wanting more. From cardio infused sequences to hardcore ab sprints, your endurance and metabolic rate will definitely get a boost for the entire day. I enjoyed the workout and would definitely go to the class again. I particularly liked the leg and ab sequences and was surprised at how tough I found it.
Who’s it for: Everyone and anyone, regardless of fitness levels or gender. Ashley’s DEFINE method caters to all shapes and sizes.
