Supermarkets launching vegan ranges aren’t anything new anymore but we still love to hear about it. It makes our hearts sing that consumers are becoming more conscious about how their food is being produced and that supermarkets are listening. Tesco’s Wicked Kitchen vegan range which first launched at the beginning of the year and 10 months later, they’ve added even more products. And we got to try them out.
Ok, so before we start, here’s where I ‘fess up. I’m not a vegan. But I love vegan food. At home, my husband, two year old, six month old and myself are veggie. Meat is a rare occasion in our house, even fish. Every year I do Veganuary and vividly remember the difficulty I had during my first year in 2014 when there was significantly fewer vegan offerings.
At the moment, my life is a bit of a rush so I’ve been making fewer hearty home cooked meals and relying too much on easy wins for the kids such as pesto pasta with peas. That Tesco has more plant-based ready-meals gives me hope that I can eat more ethically.
The lovely PR team from Tesco sent me a bunch of items from Wicked Healthy’s expanding range. This is what I thought of them:
Mac Attack Salad Bowl – I normally prefer my mac and cheese hot but I was willing to eat this salad bowl with an open mind (and mouth); it definitely feels a lot more healthy than a normal mac and cheese and the chilli gives it fire.
All the Rage Rolls – My husband caught me as I was about to eat both of these, so we had this as a meal with beans and peas. He thought it was delicious! We’ll definitely be getting these again. I’m a little partial to sausage rolls so these are a fantastic alternative (although they don’t quite beat the veggie rolls you can get at Salt the Radish).
Pesto Lasagne – I really enjoyed this but my husband thought this was too sweet. Apparently it has cauliflower in but I couldn’t taste that which was a relief. I liked the seeds topping it. And I’d definitely buy this again too. But I definitely wouldn’t share it with my husband – he didn’t appreciate it properly.
Charred Pineapple Dream Cake – This was so pretty! It’s extremely sweet but definitely tasty. The sweetness stopped me having too much which was a good thing as otherwise I might have finished it all off in one go… It’s passionfruity, tropical tastiness.
Red Velvet Brownie – This is definitely not something you can tackle yourself – it’s huge! It looks pretty and combines raspberry and chocolate so it feels less red velvet and more raspberry brownie. I’m not that much of a fan of fruit and chocolate so this isn’t my favourite and was also a little dry.
