Vevolution, a vegan events and media company, invited Healthy Living London to the launch of Tesco’s new plant-based ready meal range, Wicked Kitchen. We were able to sample the delicious dishes created by brothers Derek and Chad Sarno, the chefs and creators behind Wicked Kitchen. Launched this week, their meals include a range of sandwiches, salads, pizzas and ready meal options and they are healthy, delicious and colourful. It’s no surprise that they are already flying off the shelves.
When I joined in with the Veganuary challenge a few years ago, I remember standing in the aisles of the local supermarket and staring at the shelves, exhausted from having read so many ingredient labels! There were just so few ready meal options available as most of the vegetarian options contained dairy. Being thrown in the deep end and not knowing very much about veganism, I found it so hard to grab a meal on-the-go and ended up sticking to bland flavours and basics; salads, hummus, bread and feel-awfuls (my mother’s name for falafels!). Veganuary’s restaurant guide is awesome and their fantastic recipe section on their website is invaluable; their sweet potato quesadilla quickly became a firm favourite, so it was easy to create flavourful dishes when I had the time, but there was still a clear gap in the market for healthy and varied ready meals.
Derek and Chad Sarno have teamed up with Tesco and created twenty plant based meals… so far (I’m hoping there will be more). Launched on Monday, they have already proven popular and the demand has already been six times more than expected.
“With the number of vegans in the UK rising exponentially, and a third of the population identifying as flexitarian, Tesco has recognised the time is right to significantly expand its plant-based range.” Derek Sarno
During the event, Nicole and I were able to sample a few of the offerings. We were also given a goody bag to take home with a selection of five of the meals. Each meal was unique, flavourful and packed with goodness. The Fiery Tofu & Slaw Sandwich had a sharp tasty punch packed into this ready meal. I used to describe tofu as like chewing plastic, but this sandwich has totally changed my view, it was delicious. I am proud to say that I am a tofu convert… well a Wicked Kitchen tofu convert!
“Everything we create is a bold marriage of delicate and punchy flavours, crunchy textures, and all with knife-sharp attention to detail.” Derek and Chad Sarno
These handmade meals are full of fresh ingredients and its these crunchy, colourful and tasty concoctions that will keep you coming back for more. They even have pizzas without that horrible plastic-like fake cheese. These pizzas are full of healthy, fresh and natural ingredients. Thank you Wicked Kitchen and Tesco, for making a tasty plant-based food range. We especially love that your sandwiches and salads are perfect for lunch on-the-go.
