HOT OFF THE PRESS// The Kaia Perfect Squat Challenge has just launched in the UK, today! Available in the app store, this snazzy little app turns your phone into a personal trainer. Using AI motion tracking technology (no idea how this works, but it’s amazing) your phone judges your squat technique and corrects you… a lot! (Well, it certainly corrected me a lot!)
So, What Is The Kaia Perfect Squat Challenge?
I was able to test out the app this weekend, prior to it’s launch today, to see what The ‘Kaia Perfect Squat Challenge’ is all about. Once I downloaded the app onto my phone from the App store, I created my account and watched the intro video. This introduction gives you clear and easy instructions; you need a little space and somewhere to prop-up your phone, so that it can ‘observe’ your technique and correct you, if necessary. The App then instructs you how to position your body; knees shoulder width apart and eyeline up. The female voice then talks you through the squat and your phone’s camera watches you as you do this. I don’t understand this impressive technology, but the voice knows what you’re doing wrong or right! I was told, “That was better” when I corrected my movement with the advice she gave.
As I got the hang of the correct movement (it took me about 10 squats as I’ve clearly been doing them wrong for some time now) the pace is quickened and the counter is on. You then challenge yourself to see how many you can (or want) to do…. BUT… only the perfect squats count. So, if you do a rubbish squat, the counter doesn’t go up! I must have done what I thought was about 100 squats, but only 30, yes, 30, counted! My issue… my knees go over my toes and this is wrong, and believe me, the voice is happy to tell you so!
So, What Did I Think?
Well, just like any successful PT in my eyes, you both hate them and respect them! Hate them because they work you to your core and it hurts! And you respect them because they are good at what they do and they make you want to come back for more. You are learning the correct way to execute the movement and with regular practice, Kaia will make those 100 squats all count (hopefully!).
What I really like about this app is that you can challenge your friends. Your score is kept and you can send it to your workout buddies, to challenge them too. As I only had the beta version this weekend, I wasn’t able to test this out, but I am looking forward to challenging @wabbitpie from now on!
This is just the beginning for this technology. Currently, the app is only offering the squat challenge, but I don’t think it will be too long until they offer more, such as the Perfect Sit-Up.

The app is free! Yay! However, it’s currently only available for iPhone and iPads, version 2015 onwards (for now).
